Designed by world-renowned artist Andy Scott, The Calling stands more than 30 feet tall and 90 feet wide as it rises to greet visitors to United Village. Since its opening in 2024, this one-of-a-kind work of art has quickly become a Minnesota landmark and a must-see destination drawing visitors from far and wide.
Weighing in at 25 tons, measuring 89 ½ feet from one wingtip to the other, and standing 32 ½ feet tall, The Calling is one of the largest works of art in the western hemisphere. The unique sculpture–which depicts a powerful and majestic loon rising up in the water–has over 50,000 individually designed and hand-crafted stainless steel “feathers” composed in a three-dimensional mosaic technique. This piece was commissioned by the William W. and Nadine M. McGuire Family Foundation specifically for the Midway location.
The work of Andy Scott combines traditional draftsmanship and sculpting methods with a contemporary approach to fabrication on a large scale. Working by hand, he uses a distinctive welded steel assembly technique which develops sculptural forms that are created from thousands of meticulously assembled small steel sections and panels.
The widely acclaimed artist is the recipient of numerous awards for his work and has installations across the world including in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, Mexico, Australia, and the United States. His best-known work is the 100-foot-tall Kelpies located in Falkirk, Scotland, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
Scott spent over two years working on The Calling, with construction and installation led by fabricating partner Dyson & Womack along with dozens of craftsmen, engineers, riggers, and crane operators.
The Calling and its surrounding plaza are open year-round, from 7 am - 11 pm daily.
The Calling is located on the northwest corner of Allianz Field, at the intersection of Snelling and University.
